On the National day for the sea, celebrated today, the Municipality of Esposende signed a partnership and cooperation protocol with the Association of Professional Fishermen of Esposende to materialize one of the actions of the project “E-REDES – Enhancing biodegradable fishnets to promote sustainability: a pilot study in the Northern Littoral Natural Park ”, approved under the Call Small Grants Scheme #1 – Projects to prevent and raise awareness to reduce marine litter.

The E-Redes project is a pilot study promoted by the Municipality, in partnership with the municipal company Esposende Ambiente, the University of Minho and the Environmental Association - Rio Neiva, which aims at implementing a pilot study in the Marine Protected Area of the Northern Littoral Marine Park, were degradable gillnets and trammel nets will be provided to the fishing community in an unprecedented pilot test. The effect of this initiative on the reduction of ghost fishing and of synthetic plastic materials in the ocean will be assessed. The signing of this protocol formalizes a partnership of great importance, since the participation and involvement of the fishing community in the E-Redes project is vital for the success of the operation.

The President of Esposende Municipality, Benjamim Pereira, underlined that this is an innovative project that shows the Municipality's concern both with environmental issues and the fishing community.

“Today, National Day for the Sea, nothing better than signing a cooperation protocol with the Fishermen's Association so that they can help achieving the goal of reducing plastic in the seas and oceans, as marine pollution caused by non-degradable plastics has become one of the most serious problems worldwide. Subsequently the sustainability of using biodegradable materials versus conventional synthetic gear will be assessed considering economic (costs and local economy), environmental (ecosystems health and biodiversity) and social (traditions and local practices) factors. ”, the President said.

It should also be noted that the E-Redes project contributes to the fulfillment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, namely SDG 11 - Sustainable cities and communities, SDG 12 - Sustainable production and consumption, SDG 14 – Life below water and the SDG 17 - Partnerships for Sustainable Development.
