The Municipality of Esposende has the mission of defining strategies and guidelines for the sustainable development of the municipality, contributing to the affirmation of its importance and competitiveness within the region and country, through the implementation of measures and programs in different areas of competence and promoting the quality of life of its citizens, in constant dialogue with the institutions and the different agents of local intervention.
In the context of E-REDES project, it should be noted that the Municipality of Esposende has, in recent years, been demonstrating its commitment and its ability to respond to the challenges that are posed in terms of sustainable development, namely aiming to contribute to the achievement of the Objectives Sustainable Development of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, often conceiving and implementing, through the establishment of partnerships, several projects regarding biodiversity and marine ecosystems and promoting scientific research applied to nature conservation and management of marine resources, as well as the promotion of environmental awareness and education.
These actions are interconnected with municipal strategies and take into account the objectives present in the National Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change (ENAAC) as an important contribution to pursuit the Millennium Development Goals (SDGs).
A participatory citizenship, based on sustainability principles, is one of the paradigms that the Municipality of Esposende intends to reinforce, for which it is necessary to communicate effectively with the population, leading them to collaborate and apply actions to adapt to climate change by providing information, tools and means that enhance public participation.
Environmental themes are addressed annually, many of which are directly related to the reality of the Esposendense territory, with a view to the shared, sustained and consistent construction of a common vision of the Municipality of Esposende. In this context, biodiversity and the management of natural resources have always been constant themes.

The University of Minho aims to be a University without walls, focusing on the regional, national and international socio-economic environment. UMinho is a research university, committed to enhancing the Knowledge-Research, R&D chain, as evidenced by a series of indicators. The proportion between doctoral students and the teaching team is greater than 1; the fraction of graduate students in the total student population is over 20%; the relationship between research projects and doctorates is greater than 0.5; about 150 doctors are awarded every year; the average annual production of papers in scientific journals is impressive for an eclectic university: above 2 / ETC / year; citations increase strongly each year; 250 R&D contracts are signed annually with companies. Among the 33 research units of UMinho evaluated by FCT in 2014, 1 was considered exceptional, 12 excellent and 10 very good.
Within the context of H2020, UMinho has already seen 55 projects approved, coordinating 11 of them. In relation to H2020, UMinho is also the 1st Portuguese research organization, considering the number of participations in projects and the EU contribution per organization. UMinho assumed a great involvement in relation to the socioeconomic environment, particularly in terms of innovation and technological development. In this context, it is important to improve knowledge based on the management of intellectual property, an area in which UMinho is one of the portuguese universities with the highest number of registered patents. UMinho manages a project in collaboration with BOSCH - HMIEXEL "Essential R&D around the development and production of advanced multimedia solutions for the automotive cycle", which is one of the largest collaboration projects between the Academy and the Industry of all time in Portugal.
IB-S is the institute of the University of Minho to which the team of researchers involved in this project belongs, and is based on a fundamental notion that technological solutions to the pressing and complex sustainability problems that the world faces cannot be found in isolated disciplinary areas. IB-S develops multidisciplinary research to provide new materials, methodologies and strategies, to support the rehabilitation of the built environment, the conservation of Natural Capital and the compatibility of both. The derived innovation aims to strongly impact the circular and blue economies.
Among others, several projects related to the theme of this application stand out, in particular the Next-sea, a Structured project under which new monitoring solutions and new materials are being developed for coastal areas, in order to allow adaptation to global changes.
The Institute of Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (ISISE) and the new Institute of Bio-Sustainability (IB-S) develop cutting-edge fundamental and applied research in modern integral structural engineering, including safety, functionality, efficiency and the environment. This holistic approach, which includes superstructure and substructure, allows for more efficient and competitive structural systems. This approach also involves, among other fields of science, materials science, construction technologies and life cycle analysis. ISISE has about 1600 m² of laboratories in Guimarães, with two areas with strong floor and reaction wall. Some of these facilities are at the new Bio-Sustainability Institute (IB-S), co-led by ISISE.

EAmb - Esposende Ambiente, EM, a municipal company under the terms of Law No. 50/2012, of August 31, started its activity in 2005 after the remodeling of Esposende Municipalized Water and Sanitation Services.
In addition to other competencies in the field of environmental management, as of 2010, EAmb also undertakes the development of environmental educational projects in the Municipality and the management of the Environmental Education Center of Esposende (CEA), a municipal equipment dedicated to environmental education, promoting an education for sustainability, which integrates spaces with various values: exhibition spaces, a library, an ecoteca, an auditorium, in addition to a thematic trail and the Municipal Garden itself. The main exhibition of the Environmental Education Center contains a variety of interactive equipment, allowing visitors to “navigate” through various scenarios, where they can have access to information related to the themes of waste, water, biodiversity, energy and climate change. Environmental education projects and activities are ongoing since 1997. Several educational initiatives aimed at all groups of local society, as well as the visiting population, are promoted and developed every year, with a view to achieving sustainability goals. In addition to awareness-raising, training and education activities carried out in the spaces, CEA also develops its educational activity in educational and teaching establishments, as well as in different parts of the territory, such as forest areas and beaches. Since the beginning of 2019, CEA has also played the role of “Centro Azul”, a privileged space with regard to the environmental awareness of beach users, also giving continuity to the development of environmental education activities on beaches and surrounding spaces in the scope of the Blue Flag award.
Education for sustainability thus constitutes one of EAmb's missions. It is essentially a bet on future generations and a contribute to the sustainable development of the region.
Esposende Ambiente also assumes the municipal responsibilities in terms of waste and beach management, with a special focus during the high season, ensuring the procedures lead to the attribution of the Blue Flag award in the municipality beaches. EAmb has extensive experience in organizing beach cleaning actions, either by its own resources, or through environmental volunteering actions, promoting, whenever possible, the routing of collected waste for recycling.
